Sports Massage

Sports Massage involves the manipulation of the soft tissues of the body through a variety of techniques. The benefits are physical – such as an increased range of motion and flexibility, stress reduction, and improved circulation, as well as physiological and psychological. In order to achieve a state of wellbeing, these three states should be in balance.

Sports massage should be carried out by a qualified therapist who has an in-depth knowledge of anatomy and physiology.

It is important to drink plenty of water after your treatment to aid in flushing metabolic waste from the tissues.

Sports massage is used for the following conditions:

  • Rehabilitation of sports injuries or repetitive strains.
  • To improve posture.
  • It helps to relax muscles and reduce pain. It improves the elasticity of the tissues.
  • It is used to improve performance by breaking down scar tissues in muscles, tendons and ligaments that have become damaged.
  • It improves blood circulation.
  • It promotes faster healing by encouraging the uptake of oxygen and nutrients into the soft tissues and enables the removal of waste products such as lactic acid.
  • It encourages lengthening of the muscles thereby improving flexibility. It helps to promote a sense of wellbeing.
  • It has uses in pre and post sporting events

There are three main techniques of massage frequently used in Sports Massage. They are effleurage, petrissage and frictions. Massage pressure should be directed towards the heart to increase the venous and lymphatic flow. The strokes also ensure that excess pressure does not cause any damage to blood vessels.

Exceptions and Contraindications

People who suffer from the following conditions or disorders should consult their GP or our massage therapist before undergoing a sports massage:

Recent fracture; broken bones; Known osteoporosis; Bone softening diseases; Phlebitis; Cancer; Varicose veins; Pregnancy in some cases; Some skin conditions; Acute infectious disease; Chilblains; Aneurysm; Periostitis; Heavy bruising; Myositis ossificans; Rheumatoid arthritis; Thrombosis; Active gout; Artificial blood vessels; Open wounds; Tumours; Haemophilia or other blood disorders; Melanoma; Sunburn or other burns; Warfarin; Severe high blood pressure; High doses of Aspirin.
